For over 40 years, New York Blood Center has provided the community with transfusion products, research laboratories and education. In 2005, the non-profit organization acquired an existing warehouse building located in Long Island City, with plans to renovate the space in order to create a central processing facility. As a result of our long-standing professional relationship with NK Architects, mitchell architectural group, p.c. was commissioned to provide all laboratory planning and design services from programming through construction. This involved meeting with the users in order to determine current and future needs as well as planning for any necessary equipment. Because of the building’s unique features, the laboratories were designed to incorporate high, sloped ceilings and large glass windows which brought in outside light from corridor skylights.
